SUZANI comes from the Persian word ‘suzan’, which means "needle", and it refers to embroidered hangings or fabric coverings. The
birthplace of suzani is what is now Uzbekistan, the area along the Silk Road that interconnected the cultures of Europe, Turkey, China and the Muslim
world. Islam came to this area in the eighth century. Over time many splendid cities arose there, among them Bukhara, Samarkand, Shakhrisabz and Khiva.
